Sainsbury’s announced yesterday the launch of 2 new iPhone applications for shoppers of its supermarket.

The first application is for the Sainsbury’s loyalty scheme, Nectar, offering customers exclusive bonus offers and a way to check current Nectar point balances on the move.  The other application  for Sainsbury’s stores details new deals hitting the stores, personalised offers and a store locator to find your nearest supermarket.

With their new iPhone applications Sainsbury’s have now joined supermarket giants, Tesco, who have a mobile clubcard application for the iPhone, and Ocado- the first supermarket to offer the ability to shop online through a mobile application, last July.

In a press release for Sainsbury’s, Mike Coupe, the Group’s Commercial Director comments: “Our customers are always looking for ways to save money and time and the Sainsbury’s app will allow them to do just that. With our app you will be able to quickly find your nearest Sainsbury’s and receive exclusive, personalised bonus points offers on the go. Through our partnership with Nectar, our customers will never miss out on deals and be able to reward themselves.”

While currently the free applications are only available on the iPhone, there are plans to develop the apps for more devices in the future, according to their official Twitter page: “We’re iDevice only for now, but we’re looking at developing apps for other platforms over the coming months”

Will we see a mobile recruiting app for Sainsbury’s as well in the near future?
